Don’t sell Acholi land - Justice Dollo
Gulu. High Court Judge Alfonse Owiny-Dollo has warned the Acholi against selling their land to investors.
He said they should only lease out their land to investors for a specified time in order to preserve it for the future generation.
He was speaking at a four-day land conference for Acholi leaders at Comboni Samaritans in Gulu on Wednesday.
Justice Owiny-Dollo castigated local leaders who are mobilising residents against land registration.
He said such leaders politicise land matters for selfish gain yet land registration will help ward off land thieves.
“I appeal to the people in Acholi to register all their land whether it is communal or customary land. There are some leaders who don’t want you to certify your land because of their interests and yet this only leads to land grabbing,” he said.
Agago North MP Ogenga Latigo called for sensitisation of the local people on land registration and other processes related to land.
Aswa County MP Reagan Okumu called for unity among all leaders and to work closely with the locals regarding land conflicts.
The Acholi chiefdom prime minster, Mr Ambrose Olaa, said since the year began, 68 cases of land grabbing have been resolved by the Acholi cultural institution.
