EC boss tipped for IUIU top job

Kampala. Electoral Commission chairperson Badru Kiggundu has been tipped to replace the rector of Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) who is set to retire this year.
Others in contention for the top seat are the current two deputy rectors at the institution.
Highly placed sources at the university told Daily Monitor that the IUIU deputies Dr Muhammad Mpezamihigo in charge of academics, Dr Abdul Mpaata (finance) and Mr Kiggundu, were shortlisted for the top job, after a long search.
The IUIU rector, Dr Ahmed Ssengendo, will retire later this year having served in the position since 2004.
Dr Ssengendo recently said he would not seek another term in office despite the fact that the law that governs the university grants him such an opportunity. He said he would return to lecturing.
A new rector is expected to be announced in the next UIUI Council meeting scheduled to take place on November 13.
The IUIU spokesperson, Mr Shaban Lukooya, said despite the development, the five–member search committee led by Prof Abdul Kasozi, had not zeroed on any among the trio, adding that consultations with stakeholders were still underway.
Mr Mpezamihigo said on Monday he was not aware that his name had been shortlisted “but I will be much privileged to continue serving the institution in different capacities, as I am still serving diligently in my position”.
