Ex-Kasese FDC legislator defects to NRM party

Kampala- Former Busongora Member of Parliament, Christopher Kibanzanga, has defected from the Forum for Democratic Change to the ruling National Resistance Movement.

Mr Kibanzaga took an oath of allegiance to the NRM party in the presence of President Museveni and leaders of both the Bakonzo and the Babwisi/Bamba at State House in Kampala over the weekend.

They were invited by Mr Museveni to discuss peace and harmony in the Rwenzori sub-region.

The former MP joins two former FDC officials; former Kilak County, MP Mr Micheal Ocula and the Kitgum Mayor Mr Richard Ojara Okwera, who have defected to NRM.

When Daily Monitor contacted Mr Kibanzanga on phone on Tuesday, he confirmed that he is now an NRM member and he did this in good faith.

He said he had made up his mind to join the ruling party for the purpose of creating peace in the Rwenzori sub-region.

“There is time for everything and time for me to cross over to NRM has come. I have joined NRM in order to create peace in the Rwenzori sub-region. People used to think that being an FDC member means being an enemy to the government,” Mr Kibanzanga said.

One of the opinion leaders in Bundibugyo District who attended the meeting told Daily Monitor on condition of anonymity that majority of the people in the area did not support the Opposition, saying they talked to President Museveni to convince Mr Kibanzanga to defect to NRM.

The FDC spokesperson Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda criticised Kibanzanga’s conduct wondering whether he has finished the struggle that made him join the FDC party.

He added that Mr Kibanzanga owes FDC party members an explanation for his desertion.

We shall carry on
“People are impoverished and NRM has taken advantage of this by giving handouts. As FDC, we shall carry on with our work despite his departure,” Mr ssemujju said.
