FDC's Amanya elected Kyambogo university guild president

  • Amanya was born in 1997 to Jane Kemigisha and Zepher Abamanya of Kebisoni in Rukungiri District in Western Uganda. He is a second year Bachelor of Accounting and Finance student and Chairperson of School of Management and Entrepreneurship Executive Committee.
  • The situation went out of hand on Tuesday when the university postponed the polls, saying the Electoral Commission wasn't ready. Police fired live bullets and teargas to disperse angry students.

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party candidate, German Amanya is the new Kyambogo University Guild president.

The university Electoral Commission Chairperson, Robert Asiimwe declared Amanya elected on Wednesday evening at the Student's Centre, the official tally centre.

Mr Amanya garnered 3,701 votes of the 8,451 ballots cast. Mr Paul Opesen came second with 2,137 votes followed by Mr Eddy Akena in third position with 1,013 votes.
Mr Joel Ssemuju came in fifth position with 716 votes followed by Richard Mugisha with 434 votes, Haruna Kilenzi 211 votes, Abraham Muhumuza 189 votes, Nasif Lubanga 184 votes while Frederick Okot trailed the pack with 107 votes.
Shortly after being declared winner, Mr Amanya pledged to improve the lighting system and sanitation in the university. He also said he will lobby for exchange programmes for students to other universities as well as advocate for the introduction of supplementary exams for final year students who get retakes.

The situation went out of hand on Tuesday when the university postponed the polls, saying the Electoral Commission wasn't ready. Police fired live bullets and teargas to disperse angry students.
Police also picked up several students and locked them up briefly at Jinja Road Police station. Andrew Mugarura, the Chief Security Officer Kyambogo University, says all students were released.


Who is German Amanya?

Amanya was born in 1997 to Jane Kemigisha and Zepher Abamanya of Kebisoni in Rukungiri District in western Uganda. He is a second year Bachelor of Accounting and Finance student and Chairperson of School of Management and Entrepreneurship Executive Committee.

Amanya went to Kebisoni Primary School betweeen 2001 and 2009 where he served as class monitor and deputy head prefect. He joined St. Paul's Seminary Rushoroza for his Ordinary Level between 2010 and 2013.

While there, Amanya served in various capacities including Coordinator Catholic charismatic, altar boy, and football captain and information prefect. In 2014 and 2015, Amanya went to Mbarara High School (Chaapa) where he served as a Political Editor of Chaapa information desk and the president of the Entrepreneurship students at the school.
He has been at Kyambogo since 2016/2017 academic year and has served as the Guild Representative Councillor (GRC) of the School of Management and Entrepreneurship. He has been the faculty president, and chairperson of property and establishment committee of Kyambogo University.
He also represents Evening students on the FDC Kyambogo Chapter, and doubles as the party president at Kyambogo. He heads St. Paul's Seminary Old Boys Association. He is the Vice President Mbarara High School Old Students Association at Kyambogo.
