What you need to know:

  • Mr Chris Obore, the director of communication and public affairs at Parliament, said calling MPs incompetent is to doubt the power of citizens who voted them since they do not appoint themselves.

Kampala. The Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has said Members of Parliament are incompetent and that is why they pass laws that impact negatively on the population.
The remarks come after the House endorsed new taxes on social media and Mobile Money and other legislations that the public criticised.
Artistes and Mobile Money agents have vowed to stage demonstrations across the country tomorrow to protest the taxes.

Addressing journalists yesterday at the FDC headquarters in Najjanankumbi, Kampala, the party spokesperson, Mr Ibrahim Ssemujju, said the new taxes should be returned to Parliament for discussion so that all MPs reject them because they have now tested their implications.
“We have always told the population as FDC to vote leaders with capacity to understand what takes place in Parliament but (President) Museveni says they ‘vote NRM even if they just sleep.’ Majority of those MPs make decisions they do not understand, so much as you sympathise with the population, you should also sympathise with the MPs because they did not know but now they know,” Mr Ssemujju said.

However, Mr Chris Obore, the director of communication and public affairs at Parliament, said calling MPs incompetent is to doubt the power of citizens who voted them since they do not appoint themselves.
Mr Ssemujju also said they plan to move a motion in Parliament to have the taxes revisited because they were passed without knowing their implications.
