FDC polls: Muntu, Amuriat in last-ditch campaigns

  • Buhweju County MP Francis Mwijukye and MP Franka Akello are the two candidates for Deputy Treasurer(Mobilisation)

Campaign agents for Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu and Patrick Amuriat Oboi, the front-runners for the FDC Presidential seat are holding last minute campaigns ahead of voting at mid-day today.

Agents of the two candidates are stationed at strategic points inside Namboole Stadium where they are rallying voters to support their candidates.

Delegates are being ferried in amid a downpour that has done little to dampen the electric mood inside the stadium.

The presidential race is a do-or-die affair between Gen Muntu and Amuriat, who is backed by founding President Kizza Besigye and influential Secretary General Nandala Mafabi. Muntu is backed by Ibrahim Ssemujju, MP for Kira Municipality and Chief Whip for Opposition in Parliament.

By 11am, Moses Byamugisha and Malcom Matsiko, the other two candidates in the race had not arrived at Namboole Stadium.

Police has ringed off Namboole Stadium and access can only be secured after presenting of accreditation cards.

Today's delegates conference will also elect the Deputy Treasurer (Mobilisation) and the Secretary for Labour. Buhweju County MP Francis Mwijukye and Amuru Woman MP Lucy Akello are the two candidates vying for the position.

According to the agenda, voting will be between 12:30pm -1:30 pm and tallying and announcements will be between 2:30pm-3:30pm.
