KAMPALA. Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has agreed to support their Democratic Party (DP) counterparts in the forthcoming Busia LC5 by-election.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, a Kampala suburb, yesterday, Mr Harold Kaija, the party’s deputy secretary general, said they would back DP’s Deogratias Njoki.

“We have had a long relationship with Mr Deo and we shall not field a candidate despite having strong leaders in Busia,” Mr Kaija said.

In an interview last week, the FDC president, Mr Patrick Oboi Amuriat, said they had supported Mr Njoki in the previous elections and it was most likely that they would rally behind him.

“He even used some of the FDC facilities, we cannot refuse to support him,” Mr Amuriat said.
The Busia LC5 position fell vacant in May after Court of Appeal in Mbale District threw out Mr Ouma Adea on grounds that had been convicted of corruption in 2013.

The FDC vice chairperson for eastern region, Ms Salaamu Musumba, was in Busia last week consulting intending candidates and how they would team up with DP to front one aspirant.

Meanwhile, last week, DP petitioned the Electoral Commission demanding the withdrawal of the district registrar, Mr Sam Agaba, on allegations of conniving with NRM to announce Mr Ouma as LC5.

Mr Paul Bukenya, EC deputy spokesperson, said the issue was being handled and progress would be promptly communicated when finalised.
