IGANGA. FDC supporters in Iganga District on Tuesday beat police surveillance and marched on the streets of Iganga Town before successfully holding prayers as part of a nationwide campaign started last month.
In a partial repeat of what transpired last week, the group evaded contingents of regular and riot police, marched from the party headquarters on Daudi Waiswa Road, through Oboja Road and ended up on Wagoina Road.

The group led by the chairperson of the District’s Women’s League, Ms Zurah Nabirye, kept singing “Toka kwa bara bara”, the theme song of Dr Kizza Besigye’s campaign ahead of the February 18 general election. They also chanted praises of the party’s former presidential candidate, insisting that he should be declared winner of the last elections.
“We are convinced that Dr Besigye won the election and we shall continue fighting for our victory” said Mr Hussein Waiswa, a party mobiliser.
There were changes to the venue and main celebrants. The prayers were held at Wagoina Road, which was sealed off for close to 45 minutes.

Unlike last time when the prayers were led by both pastor Michael Osinde and Sheikh Sadam Byakika, this time the prayers were led by pastor Rogers Mpata. Quoting the biblical teachings in 1 Samuel, the pastor argued that God had forsaken President Museveni just as He did with King Saul and prayed that He [God] raises another leader like he raised King David to replace Saul.
One of the party’s mobilisers, Mr Twaha Gulume, called on President Museveni to acknowlede that he did not win the February 18 election.
“We don’t want war. We are requesting President Museveni to hand over power to Dr Besigye because he is the person that Ugandans elected,” said Mr Gulume.
