Luuka- A 30-year-old man from Luuka District has, upon his own plea of guilt, been sentenced to 30 years in jail for killing his wife and two children.

Mr Malijani Batesa, a resident of Karyowa Village in Irongo Sub-county, Luuka District, murdered his wife Naomi Nakagolo, his three-year-old daughter Shakira Nabirye and his one-year-old son Abubaker Mpindi on the morning of March 15, 2012 before turning himself in at Nakabugu Police Station.

Court had earlier heard that Batesa hacked his wife and children with a panga after several days of acrimony between the couple over an extra marital relationship that he suspected her to be having with a man from the neighbouring village of Buniko.

The High Court sitting in Jinja last week convicted Batesa on all three counts of murder and sentenced him to 20 years on the first count, 25 years on the second and 30 years on the third count. Since he is to serve the sentences concurrently, he will be spending 30 years in jail.

While passing the sentence, Lady Justice Patricia Basaza Waisswa, said the offences could have attracted a death penalty, but that she was being lenient with Batesa because he voluntarily turned himself in and pleaded guilty to the offences and, therefore, had not wasted court’s time.
