MV Amani, one of the ferries that ply the Entebbe-Kalangala route on Monday broke down 30 minutes into the journey, causing anxiety among travellers.

The ferry, which had set off at about 2pm from its docking area in Entebbe was carrying 79 passangers and was heading to the island district of Kalangala.

MV Amani is one of the vessels that ply the Entebbe-Kalangala route and is currently the only one since MV Kalangala was taken for routine servicing recently.
Mr Charles Dembe, who was on the ferry told Daily Monitor the vessel broke down 30 minutes into the Lake Victoria waters.
He said the captain, Mr Michael Okwalinga, told passengers the ferry’s engine had developed some mechanical problems but asked them to remain calm.

The ferry, according to the captain, was carrying mostly Kalangala District civil servants who were returning to the island from a weekend.

Mr Okwalinga told police and the media that the ferry had developed some problems related to the flow of fuel.
However, pasangers were able to continue with their journey after the problem was sorted, according to the captain.
“There was a problem with the engine but our engineers worked on it and we were able to continue with the journey to Kalangala,” Mr Okwalinga said.
