According to the area chairman, Mr Joseph Kiyimba, the fire was caused by a charcoal stove which was left near a fuel container inside one of the temporary houses at the landing side.

Kampala- Fire on Friday night destroyed makeshift structures and property worth millions of shillings at Lambu fish landing site in Masaka District.
The property included canoes, money, household items and fuel.

According to the area chairman, Mr Joseph Kiyimba, the fire was caused by a charcoal stove which was left near a fuel container inside one of the temporary houses at the landing side.

Nobody died but 60 makeshift structures were destroyed leaving about 160 people homeless.
The residents managed to put out the fire by themselves but substantial damage had already been done.

“It is high time we revised the method and materials of building because they are some of the reasons fire quickly spreads from one room to the others whenever it breaks out,” Mr Joseph Jjuuko, the chairperson of Lambu Beach Management Unit, told Sunday Monitor.

He called upon Mr Mahmud Taban, the landlord of the landing site, to allow the residents construct permanent houses instead of putting up temporary structures which are prone to fire.

“There is no harm in people putting up houses which can resist fire or prevent it from spreading quickly in case one breaks out,” Jjuuko said.
