Mpigi- Police in Mpigi District have arrested five supporters of the ruling NRM’s candidate for Mawokota South Constituency, John Bosco Lubyayi over engaging in pre-election-related violence.

According to the district police commander, Mr Ahmed Kimera, the suspects are residents of Nabusanke trading centre in Nkozi Sub-county.
“They attacked and assaulted supporters from a rival camp last Saturday, that’s why we have arrested them to act as examples to other hooligans,” he said.

The suspects were arrested on Sunday morning, taken to Buwama Police Station and later transferred to Mpigi Central Police Station as investigations into the matter continue.

Both supporters of Joseph Bbosa Kiyingi and Lubyayi have been engaged in fierce fights ever since the campaigns started late last year, and several people have been injured during these clashes.

It is alleged that the suspects also pelted the Independent area MP Joseph Kiyingi Bbosa with stones and empty mineral water bottles when he was addressing his supporters at a rally in Nabusanke Trading Centre last Saturday.

The constituency was represented by Mr Lubyayi in the 8th Parliament before Kiyingi snatched it from him in 2011. Other contenders in the race include Vincent Mayanja (DP), Fred Kagiri (FDC) and Lubega Mukaaku (Ind.)
