Police Flying Squad to be deployed in Kitgum to hunt armed thugs

The latest victim to be gunned down was Tony Olanya, a former Uganda Revenue Authority employee and businessman, who was shot dead at his home in Ayul A, Pager Division, on Tuesday evening

has arrested 105 people in connection to murders and aggravated robberies that have rocked Kitgum District since August.

Mr Hebert Muhangi, FSU commandant, who was assigned by Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura on October 7, to crackdown the murderers confirmed that 30 people are being held over the killings, 35 in connections to robberies whereas the rest are being held on general crimes.

“Kitgum [District] has registered several murder incidents in the recent times forcing us to camp there,” Mr Muhangi said on Monday.

He said so far, 35 suspects of general crimes have been arraigned in court whereas murder suspects are still being used to trace the source of the guns they have been using to commit crimes.

“We have so far recovered three guns used in the murders. We still expect more guns. These guns were acquired during the LRA insurgency and others are from South Sudan,” he said.

On October 7, Gen Kayihura apologised to the people of Kitgum for the cumulative cases of gun-related crimes in the district. The police chief’s visit to the northern Uganda district came three days after Tony Olanya, a retired accountant who worked with Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), was shot dead at his home in Ayul B Village in Pager Division, Kitgum Municipality.

Gen Kayihura said he was not alerted of the rampant gun offences in Kitgum and swore that the police would bring the criminals to book.

Among the other people killed in district recently include Grace Ageno, a Woman Councilor for Greenland Parish in Pager Division, and 56-year-old Christine Omoya, wife of Reverend Canon Lamtoo Omoya, were lacerated to death by mysterious people armed with guns and machetes.
