The Uganda National Roads Authority has terminated the services of four contractors in Luweero District and warned other contractors who execute substandard work in Nakasongola and Nakaseke districts.

The labour-based contractors, whose contracts were terminated last week, are said to have abandoned their respective road sections, leading to overgrowing vegetation, blocked culverts and left the roadside trenches unattended to.

“The road sections are supposed to be cleaned monthly; removing road obstacles, cleaning roadside trenches and opening the culverts,” the station engineer for Luweero, Mr George Inyensiko, said last week.

A labour-based contractor is supposed to take charge of his road section by removing logs, dead animals, big stones de-silting the trenches and slashing the over grown vegetation.

UNRA said it had so far registered an improvement in vegetation control on national roads in Luweero Area but drainage clearing and maintenance were still dragging. He added that they were trying to curb this by introducing appraisals for contractors and ensuring that only good contractors are retained.
