Rev Fr Kibira, who has been the Rector of St Paul’s National Major Seminary, Kinyamasika in Fort Portal Diocese, takes over from Bishop Egidio Nkaijanabwo, 79, who is retiring after leading Kasese Diocese for about 25 years.

The announcement of the new bishop was delivered by Bishop Nkaijanabwo on Tuesday during a Chrism Mass at Kasese Cathedral in Kasese Town.

“I would like to announce to you that the Pope has appointed Rev Fr Francis Aquirinus Kibira as a new bishop for our diocese,” said Bishop Nkaijanabwo.
The April 2 letter, which is signed by the Papal Nuncio to Uganda confirming the appointment of the new bishop, was also read to the Christians.
Bishop Nkaijanabwo welcomed the announcement of his successor and thanked the Pope for answering his prayer for retirement.

“I am not yet aware of when the new bishop will be consecrated but I am happy because I will hand over to a new bishop a diocese of committed people who yearn for development,” he said.

Bishop Nkaijanabwo said the diocese is blessed to have a new bishop who will work with the Christians to help develop the diocese.
The announcement comes at a time when the diocese and the outgoing Bishop prepare to celebrate their silver jubilee slated for June 21.
