State Minister for works, Gen Edward Katumba Wamala has said the defence forces would fight against those who wish to unseat President Museveni without using constitutional means.
The former chief of defence forces who was launching the construction of the Lwanabatya – Nakibanga 18 kilometre road on Bukasa Island, Kalangala District said there have been several calls for an uprising in Uganda with several opinion leaders asking the army to overthrow Mr Museveni like the case was in Zimbabwe when Robert Mugabe was toppled.
Gen Katumba said: “So, if you bring force to chase him (Mr Museveni) out of State House, we (the army) shall use the same force. President Museveni is our boss. We know where he has brought this country, where we are and the projected future.”
On several occasions, politicians opposed to the current government dared the army to take over the current regime to which Gen Wamala indicated that it is not the army supposed to overthrow a legitimate government.
“We are all human beings. No one has authority over his or her life. So we all agree to change a leader in a constitutionally accepted method. We shall have peaceful change of power,” he said.
Gen Wamala’s deliberations came after two of the Kalangala MPs Carol Nanyondo (Kyamuswa) and Idah Nabayiga (Kalangala woman) explained why they chose to support a constitutional amendment to eliminate the age limit clause from the constitution as opposed to what their voters had requested during the consultations.
The MPs had also requested the minister to explain what political instability means since he has served several regimes and therefore, had wide range of experience.
