Girl sets herself on fire after man “divorces” her

A 16-year old girl in Iganga District has been referred to Mulago hospital after she set herself ablaze for allegedly being divorced.

Salima Nalongo a resident of Butaba village in Buyanga Sub-County was first admitted to Iganga Nakavule hospital when the upper part of the body was burnt beyond recognition but the doctors in the hospital said they were not able to handle the patient. She was then referred to Mulago hospital.

It is reported that on the evening of Wednesday 23, Nalongo put petrol on her body and set herself ablaze after the man she was living with, Blacklod Kalidi announced that he had “divorced” her and gave her Shs50,000 to transport herself back to her parents in Namutumba District.

However, Abdallah Kalange, the father of Nalongo said that Kalidi and his daughter had been cohabiting for 12 months. “I want the man arrested for defiling my daughter. I came home last week after serving a five-year sentence in Kirinya prison, only to be greeted by this sad news," he said, adding, “The law must take its course. And police must act swiftly on this matter.”
