KAMPALA- The 2015 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) results released yesterday indicate that female candidates performed better than their male counterparts in terms of percentages especially in Arts subjects.

The Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb), executive secretary Mathew Bukenya, while releasing the results at the UMA Show Grounds in Kampala announced that female candidates performed better than their male counterparts at all levels with a lower failure rate than for the males.

“In terms of percentages, female candidates performed better than males at A-E level in History, Economics, Entrepreneurship Education, Islamic Religious Education, Christian Religious Education, Geography and Literature in English.

They also performed better in General Paper and subsidiary Mathematics,”Mr Bukenya said.

He, however, noted that the male candidates performed better in Science subjects, noting that majority of female candidates offered Arts subjects as the case has been in the previous years despite the fact that the core Sciences and Mathematics are compulsory at O-Level.

In terms of numbers, a total of 13,484 females representing (32 per cent) passed with three principal passes compared to a total of 16,230 boys who passed with the same principal passes representing (27.5 per cent).

Also, 11,457 girls excelled with two principle passes (28.2) compared to the 15,350 boys. In the same ven, a total of 598 (1.5) females compared to the 1,604 (2.7) males failed the exams, according to Uneb.

There was also a notable decrease in the number of female registered candidates totalling to 42,166 in 2015 compared to 43,944 in 2014. The females constituted 41.6 per cent of the total number of candidates who took the examinations in 2015.

The performance is however, not much different from the 2014 results where the males outpaced the females in Science subjects while the latter performed better in the Arts subjects.
