Kampala- Young people should use their energy to work and make money instead of producing, Mr Francis Mondo, the commissioner for youth has said.
Speaking at an agriculture exhibition in Kampala yesterday, Mr Mondo said there are a lot of opportunities in agriculture that the youths should tap in but they need to change their attitude and stop wasting energy to make babies.
He said: “We can make the EAC the continent’s food basket because we have the climate to do that.”
“But that can only happen if you (the youths) use your energy well instead of making more children,” he added.
According to Mr Mondo, Ugandans currently produce 1.6 million babies up from 1.2 million recorded last year.
“This means that young people are spending a lot of time making babies,” Mr Mondo told a group of youths.
Dr Fina Opio, the executive director, Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in East and Central Africa, said youths are missing in agricultural research, an area that can make a difference in their live.
“Most researchers are 40+. Even those who have since retired have been recalled,” she said.
