The Acholi prime minister’s office has dismissed allegations that the government built ‘substandard’ palaces, saying most of the houses are occupied because they were well-built.

Ker Kwaro Acholi (KKA) said in a statement that the chiefs’ houses were all constructed and handed over in good condition.

“It is therefore wrong at this point in time to allege that the government built substandard palaces and which are unfit for habitation. Any defects that were noticed at the time of completion of the project were duly rectified by the office of the Prime Minister (OPM),” the KKA said on Monday.

The statement comes on the backdrop of reports that several clan chiefs in Acholi sub-region were criticising the government for building ‘substandard’ palaces.
However, KKA observed that OPM technicians continue to monitor the projects and will advise the chiefs on maintenance requirements of the houses.

“The five houses whose sites had land conflicts have also been finished and are yet to be handed over,” reads part of the statement.
According to the statement, the construction of the chiefs’ palaces was a “brilliant idea from the paramount chief of Acholi and the President (Yoweri Museveni)” to resettle and reintegrate the chiefs into their community.

“The project, therefore, should not be politicised since the chiefs and the Acholi community supported the initiative,” adds the statement dated January 21.
