Government to offer free hepatitis B vaccine in Kampala and surrounding areas

Government of Uganda is to offer free hepatitis B vaccines in Kampala and surrounding areas of Wakiso, Mukono and Mpigi among others.
The road map for these free camps, according to Dr Charles Olaro, the director clinical services will be announced next week.
He said they want to utilise the unused vaccines which are due to expire in six months.
“We are going to give information on road map for Hepatitis B vaccine next week. Through NMS, We are still collecting the vaccines from the various districts. We want to give them like we did for yellow fever. The vaccines have six months to expire," he told journalists in Kampala on Monday.
Currently, NMS is getting these unused vaccines from the various districts which have been offering hepatitis B vaccination in public facilities.

This comes days after preliminary laboratory test results showed that contents of the hepatitis B vaccines found on the Ugandan market in March were genuine but with changed labels.
According to a report issued by National Drug Authority, the vaccine earlier suspected to be counterfeit were found to be genuine but with falsified labelling.
In collaboration with World Health Organization, the NDA report indicates that samples of both the suspected fake vaccine were subjected to confirmatory tests at the United Kingdom’s Medicines and Health products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
