Government appoints directors for Kiruddu, Kawempe hospitals

Kampala. The Ministry of Health has appointed three acting directors for semi-autonomous Kawempe, Kiruddu and Mulago specialised maternal and neonatal hospitals.
Dr Charles Kabugo will be the acting head of Kiruddu while Dr Nehemiyah Katusiima will oversee Kawempe with Dr Evelyne Nabunya running the new maternal and neonatal unit at Mulago.
They will be deputised by Dr Robert Sentongo, Dr Lawrence Kazibwe and Dr Jolly Nankunda, respectively.

“We have appointed acting heads of Kawempe Hospital, Kiruddu Hospital, and [Mulago] Women’s hospital to make them ready to offer services to the public,” Dr Diana Atwiine, the Health ministry’s Permanent Secretary, said on Wednesday.
Kawempe and Kiruddu hospitals were formerly health centre 1Vs under Kampala Capital City Authority with an in-patient capacity of 177 each, but will now operate as national referral centres.

More health workers
Both have been serving as satellite hospitals for Mulago that has been under renovation.
The Health Service Commission is yet to approve the 700 health workers together with their permanent directors who applied for the jobs at Kawempe and Kiruddu hospitals.

Dr Pius Okongo, the chairperson of the Health Service Commission, said they hope to conclude the recruitment for the two hospitals by the end of September.
“We have just concluded the exercise of interviewing the shortlisted heads of those hospitals and others and the results are not yet out,” Dr Okongo said.
