President Museveni has reiterated government’s position of neutrality as far as cultural institutions are concerned and maintained that the NRM does not tolerate sectarianism.
The President made the remarks yesterday while receiving former members of the Opposition from Kasese District who defected to the ruling NRM party.
The President, who is the NRM chairperson, received the defectors, comprising mainly of the top FDC leadership in Kasese, at his Rwakitura country home in Kiruhura District.
Call for peaceful coexistence
He said the NRM restored cultural Institutions that had been abolished by the Obote regime and also brought about democracy in order to allow citizens make their own decisions and choices.
Mr Museveni urged Ugandans in general and the Rwenzori region in particular, to respect each other and live in harmony irrespective of their ethnicity.
The President told the delegation to embrace the 1995 NRM manifesto plan that he said advocates modern commercial farming, adding that army officers would be deployed to all constituencies in the country to oversee the implementation of that plan.
He urged them to concentrate on income generating activities to eradicate poverty in their homes.
