The laboratory seeks to promote the use and speaking of Swahili among Uganda for business purposes.

KAMPALA: Government will create a Swahili training laboratory to enhance the use of the language in Uganda.
Speaking in Kampala on Tuesday at the pass out of 78 people, who were training in Swahili speaking, Ms Edith Mwanje, the Ministry of East African Community Affairs’ Permanent Secretary, said the laboratory would be operational by January next year.
“Our plan is to establish a state-of-the-art laboratory where people can get training in speaking and use of Swahili as a medium of communication.”
“We are optimistic that under this arrangement, a good number of Ugandans will get acquainted with the Swahili language,” she added.

Set up in Kampala
The laboratory, according to Ms Mwanje, will be set up in Kampala but will in future have regional centres.
The laboratory is a brainchild of the Ministry in Charge of East African Community Affairs and Trade Mark East Africa.
Trade Mark East Africa is an NGO that supports the EAC integration process in areas such as trade policy, reform and other trade related infrastructure.
State minister in charge of East African Community Affairs Shem Bageine said the promotion of Swahili among Ugandans will put the country on the same footing with other EAC partner states.
