A commotion on Tuesday ensued outside Bank of Uganda as a group of people tried to force their way into the building to demand the arrest and prosecution of the Director of Supervision, Ms Justine Bagyenda.

While holding placards, the group demanded president Museveni to intervene and order an inquiry into Ms Bagyenda conduct claiming the banking sector was vanishing because of her “incompetence.”

"President Museveni come out and save the banking sector. It is varnishing," one of the placards read.

The group members, however, managed to escape from security officers who tried to arrest them.

Kampala Metropolitan acting police spokesman, Mr Luke Owoyesigyire, said a general enquiries file had been opened to establish the motive of the youth.

"If they have an issue with any of BOU officials they should report to us or go to court. It was wrong to paralyse BOU operations," Mr Owoyesigyire said.

Last year, BOU  took over Crane Bank on grounds that the bank that was owned by Kampala businessman, Mr Sudhir Ruparelia posed a systemic risk to Uganda’s banking industry.

BoU later sued Mr Sudhir over alleged fraud.
