Gulu Woman MP loses husband to high blood pressure
Michael Ocan, 63, succumbed to high blood pressure Wednesday afternoon at St Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Gulu District, according to family sources.

GULU. Gulu Woman MP Betty Aol Ocan has lost her husband, Michael Ocan, a part-time lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Gulu University Kitgum campus.
He was also the immediate former headmaster of Kitgum High School for several years.
Ocan, 63, succumbed to high blood pressure Wednesday afternoon at St Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Gulu District, according to family sources.
Mr Jimmy Odoki, confirmed to Daily Monitor on Wednesday, that his father had been admitted for the last two weeks.
“My father had pressure, for the last two weeks he was in the hospital undergoing medication, but unfortunately today [Wednesday] doctors pronounced him dead,” Mr Odoki said.
He said his dad had also developed heart complications, which the doctors were still investigating.
“My father was hardworking and friendly to people. He loved participating in church activities and had wanted to attend the 40th anniversary commemoration of the late Archbishop Janani Luwum in Mucwini Sub-county in Kitgum District, but wasn’t able because he was bedridden,” Mr Odoki said.
Ocan leaves behind seven children and a wife, Ms Aol, who he wedded in 2012.
Work experience
Ocan taught at St Joseph’s College Layibi in Gulu, and was head teacher at Awere Senior Secondary School, Sir Samuel Baker School, and Kitgum High School where he retired from in 2004.
By the time of his death, Mr Ocan was the chairperson Board Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, serving his first term. He was also a representative to Gulu Municipal Development Forum, where he represented the academia.
The Director at the facility, Dr Nathan Onyachi, said Ocan’s death is a big blow to the hospital.
“We shall always mis him, there are several projects we were aiming at working on together with his team, but death has robbed us of a brilliant man,” he said.
The President of Gulu Municipal Development Forum, Mr George Aligech, said Ochan has left a gap in the development of the municipality.
“He has on several occasions guided the forum as far as development is concerned, and as Gulu municipality, we hope to be upgraded to a city status,”
he said.
The Secretary General Acholi Parliamentary Group, also the MP for Kilak South Gilbert Olanya, said the death of Mr Ocan is regrettable. He said Ocan has been very instrumental in the politics of Acholi.
“We have struggled with him as far as land in Acholi is concerned.
Some people wanted to turn it political but he advised accordingly, we shall always miss him,” Mr Olanya said Ocan has left a wide gap in the Acholi region since he has been one of the political pillars.
