The government has given a one-week ultimatum to Gulu Disabled Union Association (Gudua), an organisation for people living with disabilities (PWDs), and district leaders to speed up the distribution of wheel chairs donated to beneficiaries.
President Museveni donated 100 wheel chairs and Shs150 million to aid mobility amongPWDs in Acholi. Addressing stake holders at the weekend in Gulu Municipality, Dr Muzira David, a representative from the permanent secretary Ministry of Health, said the leaders should distribute the wheel chairs if they want the second phase of the donation to kick off.
“The disabled people and their leaders approached Mr Museveni for help. He directed the Ministry of health to deliver 100 wheelchairs which were stored at Mulago hospital in January. The leaders did not pick up the wheelchairs,” he said.
Mr Muzira added that the ministry is currently receiving pressure from the President who wants the statistics of the beneficiaries.
However, the Gulu Resident District Commissioner, Ms Catherine Lamwaka, said the ultimatum was too short, arguing that some district leaders had no prior knowledge of the donation.
The northern MP for PWDs, Mr William Nokrach, requested for more time.
