Fury. The mob attacked the home of an in-law demanding an explanation about their daughter’s death, forcing police to shoot in the air to disperse them.
Anti-riot Police fired live bullets and tear gas canisters to disperse rowdy residents of Kakoli in Katira Sub-county, Budaka District, who attacked the in-laws of a woman that died under mysterious circumstances.
The relatives of the deceased woman, armed with pangas, axes and machetes, confronted their in-laws at Mr Yanga Shaban Kamolu’s home in Bukaduka village, Jami parish, Kamonkoli Sub-county.
The attackers allegedly torched eight houses and destroyed several banana plantations in what was suspected to be revenge.
“The gruesome murder of the woman angered her relatives. That’s why they mobilised and attacked the man’s home, leaving whatever was in their sight completely destroyed,” Mr Edinandi Piringo, the Kamonkoli LC3 chairman, said.
It’s alleged that the body of the woman identified as Aisha Takali, 26, with whom Mr Kamolu had two children, was found half-naked by one Mzee Kategero, lying in the bush. The deceased and her husband had reportedly been seen walking together earlier.
The district police commander, Mr Martin Otim said exhibits found at the scene of crime signal that she was first raped before being strangled.
“We have launched investigations to establish the root cause of this murder. Cases of domestic violence seem to have taken an upward trend in the district. Police have stepped up community policing programme to scale down cases of this nature,” Mr Otim said.
A postmortem was done before the body was handed over to the relatives for burial on monday.
