Hundreds receive free surgical operations

MASAKA- Hundreds of people with various ailments have received free surgical operations at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital.
The surgical operations that are being carried out by 22 doctors from India, started on Monday and ends on August 13.
The surgical camp that is organised by Rotary Club of Masaka and Rotary International, targets people with eye defects, hernia, goitre, dental problems, and other minor illnesses.
According to Mr Rajendra K. Saboo, the past President of Rotary International, the camp has attracted patients from as far as Mpigi, Lyantonde and Gomba districts.
They were referred to Masaka Referral Hospital from various health centres in their respective districts.
Mr Saboo, said on Friday that the visiting health workers would donate all the equipment being used, to Masaka Hospital.
“The camp is not only benefiting patients, but also Ugandan doctors who are working with the visiting team through learning how to use the equipment that is not available in Uganda,” Dr Herbert Kalema, a gynaecologist at Masaka Hospital said.

Over 1,000 patients are expected to receive treatment.
Most hospitals and health centres in Uganda do not have adequate staff, medical equipment, drugs and supplies that are needed for the provision of effective and quality services to patients, which affects quality healthcare service delivery.
