IGANGA.
Police in Buyende District are hunting for a man who reportedly stabbed his pregnant wife with a knife following a conflict over Shs150,000 raised from sale of rice from the family harvests.

Police said the suspect stabbed his wife, Ms Justine Mwebaza, in the family garden at Masaba village in Kagulu Sub-county, Buyende District on Tuesday afternoon.

The couple had earlier had a quarrel on how the money had been spent.

Family sources revealed that Ms Mwebaza had grown the rice to raise money to buy a plot of land to build a family house. But as soon as the rice was sold the man grabbed it and ran away.

The suspect is said to have relocated to the nearby Irundu Trading Centre where he spent the money and returned home without a penny.

“As they were in the garden, the woman asked for the money to go and pay a deposit for the land. But the man said he didn’t have it. A quarrel started,” said a witness, Ms Tape Namuwaya, adding that the suspect grabbed a knife and stabbed his wife.

The case was reported to Irundu Police Post. The critically injured Ms Mwebaza was taken to Hope Medical Centre in Iganga Town.

A surgeon at the clinic, Dr George Bamudaziza, said the victim had a pregnancy of 3 to 4 months and had sustained deep injuries in the neck, upper chest, face and fingers.

“The perpetrator could have wanted to kill her, but fortunately the object used did not reach the lungs and the esophagus. It seems the hands were cut as she tried to guard herself as they battled,” said Dr Bamudaziza.

This is the second case of a similar nature to be registered in the sub-county in a week.
A woman in Irundu village cut off the genitals of her husband for marrying a second wife.
