I did not knock Besigye supporter- Police driver

What you need to know:

Mr Andrew Felix Kaweesi, the police Director of Human Resource and spokesperson, said Mr Matsiko has refused to accept that it was 'his' vehicle seen in the NTV video footage

KAMPALA.

The arrested police driver has denied knocking the enthusiastic supporter of Dr Kizza Besigye at Kyebando on July 12.

Mr Benon Matsiko was arrested and paraded before the media on Monday last week a month after NTV broadcasted a video of a police pickup knocking down Dr Kizza Besigye’s supporter.

Mr Andrew Felix Kaweesi, the police Director of Human Resource and spokesperson, said Mr Matsiko has refused to accept that it was 'his' vehicle seen in the NTV video footage.

“This driver deployed himself on that day. We have satisfying evidence that it was his vehicle seen in the footage knocking a civilian. But he has denied,” Mr Kaweesi at the weekend.

Mr Kaweesi said Mr Matsiko’s rebuttal has stalled investigations to establish the commander who was in his vehicle. He said the police was considering prosecuting Mr Matsiko in criminal court rather than the disciplinary tribunal like his nine colleagues.

“We want him to tell us who he was with in the vehicle. That commander will tell us what instructions he gave the driver (Matsiko) and why he did not take any action when Matsiko deliberately knocked a civilian,” Mr Kaweesi said.
