Tororo- The chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Badru Kiggundu, has assured the country that he will not yield to pressure from anyone not to announce the rightful winner chosen by the people in next year’s presidential election.

He made the remarks while addressing leaders of political parties and civil society members from Bukedi sub-region during the National Consultative Forum meeting at Rock Classic Hotel in Tororo on Friday.

He pledged that the EC will use its powers under the Constitution to declare the rightful winner in the election.

“The Kiggundu of 2006 is not the Kiggundu of today, therefore, build up confidence in the Commission. We shall do the needful you want but remember, you will not force me to dance to your tune if you are not a good player,” said Mr Kiggundu.

Dr Kiggundu was responding to fears by the participants that the commission will be influenced by President Museveni to twist the results in his favour in case he lost the election.

He assured the doubting parties that the commission is doing everything possible to deliver free and fair elections. He urged all voters to shun violence during the election period.

Crime preventers condemned
Mr Amanya Mushega, the chairperson of the National Consultative Forum, condemned the ongoing recruitment of crime preventers, saying it implies the elections will comprise a lot of intimidation where voters will be forced to vote for a particular candidate.
