Rujumbura MP Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi last evening said he would oppose any attempts by the army to take over power.
The retired officer’s remarks in briefing with journalists at Parliament came in the wake of statements made by President Museveni, Defence Minister Crispus Kiyonga and Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Aronda Nyakairima that the UPDF could intervene in the country’s politics.
Maj. Gen. Muhwezi, who was among guerilla combatants that fought in the 1980 - 1986 bush war, insists that “a coup cannot happen in Uganda and I will be among those who would oppose such a move”.
Maj. Gen. Muhwezi said the situation in Uganda now favours “political engagement” and not “militarism” adding that “the UPDF is a politically educated Force which does not carry out acts that violate the Constitution at a time when they are not warranted.”
