IGG lines up 20 witnesses to testify against Parliament budget boss

KAMPALA

The state has lined up 20 witnesses to testify against the director Parliamentary budget Office, Mr Samuel Wanyaka who is accused of stealing Shs822 million.
This was revealed by Mr Thomas Okoth, an inspectorate officer from IGG when the case came up for the first time before the head of the anti-graft court, Justice Paul Mugamba, one month after Mr Wanyaka was committed to the same court for trial.
Justice Mugamba, subsequently set November 3 and 4 to hear the case after Mr Wanyaka entered plea of not guilty.
Mr Okoth said the majority of the witnesses are staff of Parliament.

The money in question was meant for service delivery surveys in the country but Mr Wanyaka allegedly stole it, which money he had access to by virtue of his employment before putting it into his personal use.
According to indictment before court, the IGG who is prosecuting this case will adduce evidence at the trial to prove that indeed Mr Wanyaka committed the offense and that he should be convicted as charged.
The IGG further states in the indictment that they have evidence to show that Mr Wanyaka between August 13 and December 19 last year, stole Shs822 million out of which he made fictitious and false accountabilities of over Shs682 million and the remaining balance of over Shs140 million was not accounted for at all.
The Ombudsman further states in the indictment that she will tender in evidence in form of false accountabilities of over Shs682 million uttered by Mr Wanyaka to the senior accountant of Parliament and also the hand writing expert report confirming that indeed Wanyaka requisitioned for the money in question. Mr Wanyaka is currently out on bail.
