The Inspector General of Police has shuffled the police officer accused of being part of those hatching assassination plots against senior government officials perceived to be opposed to the First Son replacing his father as President.
Detective Assistant Inspector of Police Nixon Ayegasire Karuhanga was accused by Gen David Sejusa, the Coordinator of Security Agencies, of planning the assassination plots, arresting his aides and detaining them at Central Police Station in Kampala.
Mr Ayegasire has been heading the Police Flying Squad since its establishment last year but Lt Gen Kale Kayihura, in a police message sent on Sunday, appointed Detective Commissioner Charles Kataratambi in his place. “I want Charles Kataratambi to establish structures in the Flying Squad to the tune of those in United Kingdom and Kenya. I wish him the best in the new appointment,” Gen Kayihura said.
However, Gen. Kayihura did not say where he had posted Mr Ayegasire, but police sources said he would be working under Mr Kataratambi as the Squad’s operations commander. The Flying Squad is a unit which gathers intelligence and arrests suspected violent criminals across the country.
The deputy police spokesperson, Mr Patrick Onyango, confirmed the changes but declined to give details of what could have caused the changes in the police unit. “The only message I know is of the appointment of Mr Kataratambi as the commandant of the Flying Squad. There are no other details I am aware of,” Mr Onyango said.
