What you need to know:

  • "For our women, please don’t put on a trouser and think you are safe. And also don’t use social media to post where you are and what you are doing this will land you into trouble..,” Gender minister Peace Mutuuzo
  • The sacking of the minister and IGP come barely a week after the body of Susan Magara was found dumped along the Entebbe Expressway in Kigo, Wakiso two weeks after she had been kidnapped.

The State minister for Gender, Ms Peace Mutuuzo, has said there is hope that security agencies will soon release comprehensive reports about the unexplained murders in the country including the recent ones involving women since there has been a shake-up of top security chiefs.

President Museveni on Sunday sacked Security minister Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde and Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura.
The two generals have in the recent past been embroiled in bickering, technical confrontations and spats.

While speaking at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala on Monday, Ms Mutuuzo said the changes in security are a sign that the government is concerned about the security of the general population.

“We hope that the reports about the murder of women will come out soon. My ministry will continue pushing these security agencies to ensure that comprehensive reports are out so that we are able to know the killers and their motive,” Ms Mutuuzo said.

The minister was addressing the nation ahead of the International Women’s Day celebrations scheduled for tomorrow at Busubuzi Core Primary Teachers College in Mityana District.

For three years, there has been public outcry about the failure by police and other security organs to release reports about the murders of women, Muslims sheikhs and other people in the country.

Close to a year, police have never released a report about the gruesome murder of former police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi.

There have been a wave of murders on women who are initially kidnapped and later killed and their bodies dumped in bushes.

Such cases were rampant in Nansana Municipality and Entebbe both in Wakiso District.
The sacking of the minister and IGP come barely a week after the body of Susan Magara was found dumped along the Entebbe Expressway in Kigo, Wakiso two weeks after she had been kidnapped.

Ms Mutuuzo advised women to stop posting their whereabouts on social media because such may be used by kidnappers to track them.

“For our women, please don’t put on a trouser and think you are safe. And also don’t use social media to post where you are and what you are doing this will land you into trouble..,” Ms Mutuuzo said.
