ILO chief commends Uganda on Labour Reforms

KAMPALA-The Director General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Mr Guy Ryder, has commended government for instituting a number of reforms geared towards boosting the decent work agenda.

Mr Ryder said the reforms are a dynamic tool for promoting social justice and inclusive growth.

He made the remarks while meeting former minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Mr Wilson Muruli Mukasa and the ministry’s permanent secretary, Pius Bigirimana at the ongoing 105 International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. He added that ILO will continue offering technical assistance through the Decent Work Country Programme.

Mr Mukasa revealed the several reforms that the government had re-constituted and operationalised the Industrial Court, which has since handled several cases, appointed the Minimum Wages Advisory Board and appointed a new Labour Advisory Board.

Other reforms include rolling out of the green jobs and fair market programme, domestication of ILO conventions, registration of work places under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Implementation of the National Employment Policy; development of the National Programme of Action on Employment, the development of the Youth Employment Plan, and development of the National Social Security Policy for Uganda.

According to the statement issued yesterday, the former minister reiterated government’s commitment to employment intensive growth, promotion of green jobs, labour productivity and protection of workers’ rights.
