Iganga Town in bomb scare

Tensions have been high in Iganga town after residents found an explosive suspected to be a grenade near the home of late Hilali Mohamed along Iganga-Bugiri highway.

The explosive was on Tuesday [today] discovered by pedestrians who immediately tipped police.

It is suspected that the explosive could have been dumped in the place at night by unknown people whose mission remains unclear.

Mr Amuza Isabirye, one of the residents expressed worry that the place where the object was found is where some Muslims always converge for tea.

Police led by Iganga district police commander, Nasibu Ndita deployed heavily at the scene to guard revellers from tampering with the explosive as they waited for bomb experts from Magamaga barracks to remove it.

The police publicist for Busoga East region, James Mubi, confirmed the incident. He said later in the afternoon, bomb experts arrived at the scene and carried it away.

“We had a bomb scare in Iganga town. We informed experts who came and carried it away as we wait for more details,” Mr Mubi said.

He said that investigations have started and asked members of the public to be vigilant and always report suspicious objects.
