KAMPALA.

The police at the weekend, shot and injured an intruder who had accessed the heavily guarded residence of Chief Justice Bart Katureebe in Nakasero, an upscale suburb of Kampala.
The man, whose identity by press time was still unknown, had been admitted to Mulago Referral Hospital under police protection as he nursed wounds he sustained.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman Luke Owoyesigire yesterday said the man cannot identify himself and that he appears to be having a mental problem. Mr Owoyesigire said the suspect was only saying one word Butabika. He said they will crosscheck with the facility to establish whether the suspect has ever been at the facility.
However, Daily Monitor established that the police upon reviewing the CCTV cameras at the Chief Justice’s residence, they established that the intruder had first attempted to vandalise two cars that had parked at the nearby Pearl of Africa Hotel and that in the process of fleeing, he jumped over the wall falling into the Chief Justice’s residence.
The CCTV cameras further showed that upon falling into Justice Katureebe’s residence, he had no way out as all the gates were closed with police guards manning them, hence was shot in the process as he climbed over the parameter wall to escape.
Reacting to this development, the Chief Justice explained that the incident happened while he was away at his country home. But he said according to the information he had received, an intruder who appeared to be mentally ill, accessed his official residence at 11am last Saturday and that it was the house-helps who saw him before calling the police.
The Chief Justice also wondered the vigilance of his police guards at his residence of how such an intruder could beat their surveillance to access his official residence.
He added that the intruder had carried along with him a small bag and bedsheets although not armed with fire arm.

Justice Katureebe went on to suspect that this intruder to be the mentally ill man who at one time, climbed a tree near his residence and slept in there.
It had to take his security details to shot in the air before he took off leaving behind clothes.
