Involve politicians in protests at own risk, police warn public

Police have warned against the involvement of politicians in demonstrations and rallies, saying they use this opportunity to fulfil their personal interests and also cause public disorder.
While addressing journalists at the Central Police Station in Kampala yesterday, the commander Kampala Metropolitan , Mr Andrew Kaweesi, also said activists should seek permission from police whenever they intend to stage a demonstration.
Lukwago refutes
However, the Kampala Lord Mayor, Mr Erias Lukwago, separately said there was no law that prohibits political leaders from involving in demonstrations and, therefore, they would continue with their activities.
“Police officers should not take the law in their hands, we as politicians have a right to demonstrate and involve ourselves in rallies and demonstrations and we shall go ahead with this,” said Mr Lukwago.
He added that although political leaders abide by all the laws, they are not ready to accept laws that are made unlawfully.
“The police should also learn to respect the constitution. They should not form their own laws and expect us to abide by them,” the city mayor added.
