Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has closed at least 15 buildings in the city centre over non-compliance with health standards.

The buildings were closed on March 22 by a KCCA enforcement team from central division led by Villey Agaba, the division planner.
The closed buildings are located on; William street (3), Nakivubo Road (2), Mackay Road (3) and Namirembe Road (7).
All traders who have been operating in the closed buildings, are currently stranded.

Peter Kaujju, the KCCA director of corporate and public affairs told Daily Monitor in an interview on Monday that the owners of the closed buildings refused to comply despite several notices which were served to them last year.
"We realised that some of the buildings in the city are not renovated, don't have clean toilets, pavers and are rarely cleaned. We don't want to put the health of the people who work in these facilities at risk and that's why we are now cracking the whip," Mr Kaujju said.

He noted that they will continue with the crackdown on more buildings to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
He said that they have arrested three people who had attempted to open the malls and that they will be produced in court.
None of the closed malls, he said, has been reopened.

Daily Monitor understands that KCCA has embarked on a massive crackdown on all city buildings which don't meet both health and physical planning standards.
