Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) executive director Jennifer Musisi has pledged to work with all the newly elected leaders of Kampala city including Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.

“KCCA is credited for being the best city authority in the region. I would like to congratulate you all who were elected. We are ready to work with you in transforming the city together,” said Ms Musisi.

She made the remarks at the ongoing swearing-in ceremony of all the elected leaders of Kampala city, including Mr Lukwago at City Hall Kampala.
Present at the ceremony are a number of government officials and leaders of the Opposition. They include security minister Mary Karooro Okurut, Forum for Democratic Change president Mugisha Muntu, Mukono municipality MP Betty Nambooze, Kyaddondo County East MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, Lubaga South MP Kato Lubwama, Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nsereko and EALA MP Fred Mukasa Mbidde, among others.

The swearing-in comes barely one week after the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Gen Kale Kayihura wrote to KCCA executive director Jennifer Musisi to postpone the Lord Mayor’s swearing-in on account that police would be overstretched with security of two visiting presidents of South Korea and Turkey and Friday’s Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations at Namugongo.
Presidents Park Geun-Hye (South Korea) and Recep Tayyip Erdogan (Turkey) left the country this week.
The KCCA spokesperson, Mr Peter Kaujju, confirmed Mr Lukwago’s swearing-in tomorrow.

Mr Lukwago has been out of office since November 25, 2013 following a controversial impeachment by KCCA councillors and protracted court battles that kept him away from City Hall until he was re-elected this year for a new term.
During the mayoral elections in February, Mr Lukwago received 176,637 votes (80 per cent) to beat his two other rivals NRM’s Daniel Kazibwe aka Raggae Dee, who polled 49,366 and Democratic Party’s Issa Kikungwe with 7,759 votes.

Despite winning the polls, there has been a long standing disagreement over Lukwago’s return to office. His swearing-in tomorrow will now return him as the new Kampala City Mayor.
Ms Nyanjura Doreen (FDC), the woman councillor representing Makerere in KCCA, said after the swearing-in, the council will be committed to serving the people who voted them into power.
“Swearing-in means officially being in office and executing official duties. Real work begins now,” Ms Nyanjura said.
At least 34 councillors were elected to represent Kampala electoral zones in the city council.
