Kampala. Law enforcement officials from Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) yesterday closed down the Uchumi Supermarket food section at Garden City over poor hygiene.
“We have closed down Uchumi Bakery facility at Garden City and its food court for operating a filthy kitchen and unhygienic environment. This followed an inspection by our public health team at the facility today (Thursday). The citywide rigorous inspection of all food facilities continues,” a KCCA statement reads in part. KCCA spokesperson Peter Kaujju confirmed the closure, saying it is part of their campaign to crackdown on all food outlets that do not meet KCCA public health standards.
When contacted, David Mugo, the Uchumi country manager, said efforts were underway to reopen the store.
“The people who conducted the operations could not take decisions. I am from KCCA, the issue was the bakery tins which as you know change after a few days. They are coming to confirm and re-open,” he said.
Last year, KCCA closed more than 15 food stores, including Shoprite Supermarket in Naalya and Tuskys in Bwaise, for failing to observe minimum health and safety standards.
