VIDEO: KCCA to spend Shs 1b on city carnival

KAMPALA. The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is set to spend at least Shs1.3b on this year’s city carnival, the institution’s executive director, Ms Jennifer Musisi revealed today.

Ms Musisi also noted that unlike the previous carnivals which have always been celebrated for two days, this year’s carnival will run for three days. However, she said that all this money will come from private companies.
This will be the fifth carnival to be celebrated in the city following its inception in 2012.
“The carnival will start from October 6 to 9 and this year’s theme is ‘cultural diversity which simply means that there will be many cultures, tribes and people of different localities and as usual, there will be fun, pomp and entertainment,” Ms Musisi said.

Ms Musisi explained that city traders and other businessmen willing to participate in the carnival will be required to pay Shs20,000, adding that booking of space starts on July 24 2017.
She made the remarks yesterday at KCCA grounds while launching the carnival. Many private companies pledged to support the event as a way of showing their solidarity with city residents.
“At first it was a one-day event but due to public demand, KCCA together with the organising partners and sponsors opted to extend this year’s festival for three consecutive days to enable all the population in Uganda and those outside Uganda to come and take part in the festivities,” she said.

Ms Musisi revealed that Tanzanian Musician, Diamond Platinumz will be the lead artist for this year’s carnival, and that the money collected will be used to renovate city schools managed by KCCA.
At least five million revellers participated in last year’s carnival but Ms Musisi envisaged a more number of revellers this year. At least 5,000 police men will be deployed in the city during the carnival to contain violence.
