SOROTI.

The High Court in Soroti District on Friday cancelled the election of Kabong District Woman MP for the beers and meat she offered to voters at Morutome village on the eve of the voting day.

Justice Billy Kainamura, in his judgment delivered by the court’s deputy registrar, Mr Ayabale Tumwebaze, quoted provision 68 of the Parliamentary Elections Act 2007 ‘that every candidate or candidate’s agent who by himself or herself or any other person, directly or indirectly, before the close of polls, offers, procures or provides or promises to procure or provide any alcoholic beverage to any person commits an illegal practice’.

Mr Kainamura confirmed that the petitioner, Ms Lily Akello, sufficiently proved that Ms Christine Tubo Nakwang through her campaign manager Gabriel Fidel Loit at Morutome village gathered 100 people whom he treated to a feast in exchange for their votes.

“The petitioner, through Francis Adupa, confirmed to this court that he was given Shs5, 000 and a bottle of beer with a promise of more money, to be given,” the judge said in the ruling.

Mr Kainamura said there was also proof of voter bribery at Katile Sub-county headquarters, Katile Town Council and Nacukul East where sachets of waragi, money and salt were distributed.

“On ground of non-compliance with Parliamentary Elections Act, the election of Kaabong District Woman MP is set aside for a fresh election,” the judge held.
