RDC's bodyguard shoots civilian for disrupting meeting

KABALE. The Police in Kabale are investigating circumstances under which a resident of Nyakihita village in Kitanga parish Buhara sub county one Venansio Byaruhanga 52 was shot in the left leg by a UPDF soldier that guards the Kabale Resident District commissioner Mr Darius Nandinda on Saturday evening.

The police spokesman for Kigezi sub region Mr Elly Maate said that the victim kept on interrupting the meeting in which the NRM party leaders were mobilizing support for the party candidate Ms Annet Kabagambe that is contesting for the LCV councilor seat for Buhara sub county.

He said that the victim’s continued deliberate interruptions of the meeting, caused locals together with Mr Venansio Kanyankore the UPDF soldier that guards the Kabale RDC to push him out of the meeting that was held at Kafunjo health center II.

However, in the process he attempted to disarm the soldier after breaking the seal of the gun which the soldier was holding hence shooting him in the leg in self defence.

Mr Maate said that the Kabale RDC took the victim to Kabale hospital and the case has been registered at Kabale police station under SD 62/21/07/208 as investigations into the matter continue.

"The police have initiated investigations to establish the actual cause of shooting to determine the way forward. I caution our people that at any moment they have issues with the security personnel never fight with them but report them to the relevant authorities to avoid such incidents,” Mr Maate said.

The Kabale RDC said that his bodyguard has already received treatment from Kabale hospital because he was seriously assaulted by the shooting victim that punched and kicked him during the scuffle.

“My bodyguard has already registered a case of assault and has recorded a statement and we have left the matter to the police for investigations because I am not sure of the motive and the courage the victim had to attempt disarming the soldier,” Mr Nandinda said.

The LCIII chairman  for Buhara sub county  Mr Joseph Baryamujura that attended the meeting said that the the victim seemed drunk and was frustrated having lost the LCI elections for Nyakihita village where he had contested as an independent candidate.
