Kadaga gets rival for Kamuli MP seat

Kampala- Efforts by sections of the populace of Kamuli to have the Speaker of Parliament, Ms Rebecca Kadaga, as the NRM’s sole candidate for the district woman MP seat in 2016 appear to have been nipped in the bud.
The former senior enforcement supervisor at the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), Ms Deborah Mwesigwa Mugerwa, has declared her intention to contest against Ms Kadaga, who has been in Parliament since 1989.
Ms Kadaga’s sole candidature initiative was launched in February by top district leaders who argue that she has distinguished herself with selfless service and commitment to her electorate over the years.
It gained momentum when the vice president of the Opposition Forum for Democratic Change in eastern region, Ms Salaamu Musumba, joined the NRM leaning youth in backing Ms Kadaga saying the Speaker is the “gem of the region”.
Addressing a press conference in Kamuli last Wednesday, Ms Mugerwa said Ms Kadaga had represented the district for far too long.
“My foremost target is reaching out to the various political camps to persuade them to unite for posterity in our district, I know my opponent belongs or heads one of these warring camps but I will still approach her because we need to work together,” Ms Mugerwa said.
She hopes to empower women and youth association.
“I have also set up a model farm in Nawansaso where I hope to be taking my people to learn modern farming. I have done this on my own using little money to set an example for the people,” Ms Mugerwa said.
