Kagame dismisses intelligence chief

Kigali. Rwandan president Paul Kagame has dismissed Maj Gen Richard Rutatina as head of military intelligence, commonly known as “J2”, under unclear circumstances.


A statement posted on the ministry of defence website on Monday stated that the president and commander-in-chief of the Rwanda Defence Forces dismissed Maj Gen Richard Rutatina from the J2 position.
Reasons for his dismissal were not provided but the statement said his dismissal took “immediate effect”.
Brig Gen Rutatina previously worked as Kagame’s adviser on defence and security before being appointed as head of military intelligence in 2013, replacing DCG Dan Munyuza, who is the deputy inspector general of police in charge of operations.


His replacement was not provided in the statement, however, other changes that took immediate effect included appointments of Maj Gen Jacques Musemakweli as army chief of staff, replacing Lt Gen Frank Mushyo Kamanzi.
Maj Gen Musemakweli previously served as commander of the republican guard and he will be replaced by Maj Gen Alex Kagame who has been division commander for southern province.
