Kagezi was an asset to us, says DPP

Kampala.

The Directorate of Public Prosecutions has praised deceased senior prosecutor Joan Kagezi as having been a valuable asset for the past 20 years that she worked with them.

A press statement signed by Ms Jane Okuo Kajuga, the spokesperson of the Directorate, said Kagezi’s killing in cold blood has instead strengthened the remaining team to continue with the work she believed in.

The Directorate listed a number of high profile cases that the deceased successfully prosecuted such as the murder involving former Arua Municipality MP Hussein Akbar Godi, Thomas Nkulungira, among others.

The two were convicted for killing their spouses.
“Ms Kagezi will be remembered as honest, committed and dedicated officer who ensured that justice and the rule of law prevails,” the statement said.

Kagezi joined the Directorate in 1994 as a State Attorney but later rose through the ranks. At the time of her death, she had been assigned on a new role of an assistant DPP heading the International Crimes Department handling terrorism, war crimes and trafficking in persons.

She was the lead prosecutor in the case of the 2010 terror suspects now before the High Court. She was also involved in the prosecution of the suspects in the recent spate of murders, robberies and terrorism in Busoga region and Kampala.
