KAMPALA.
A police officer yesterday told court that city businessman Andrew Kananura alias Desh called him to arrest one of the workers who had allegedly been stealing his money.

Mr Kananura is on trial in the High Court for allegedly killing his bar attendant Badru Kateregga in Naguru suburb in 2012.
The police officer, Mr Stephen Kalyegyera, who was testifying as the fifth state witness in the case, said on the fateful day September 29, 2012, Kananura called him saying he had arrested one of his employees who had been in habitually stealing his money.

“I advised Mr Kananura to take the suspected thief to Kira Road Police Station. After a few minutes, I called Mr Kananura who told me he had already taken the person and that he was his employee at the bar,” Mr Kalyegyera narrated to court presided over by justice Joseph Murangira.

Mr Kalyegyera said he went to Kira Road police station and found the suspect seated on the floor behind the police counter. He said he learnt the suspect's name as Kenneth Karenzi.

The witness further told court that Mr Karenzi admitted stealing Kananura's money at the bar but promised to refund it and pleaded with them to have the matter settled out of court.

“I saw Karenzi shivering and had a bruise on the left arm. He informed me that he had been assaulted before he was brought to police. However, he never mentioned the person who assaulted him,” officer Kalyegyera testified.

Another witness Mr Emmanuel Taika had told court in the previous hearing that on the fateful night, he saw Kananura beat up the deceased while demanding to know why he had stolen his money. He said Kateregga told Kananura that it was Karenzi who had given him the tip, meaning it was not Kananura's money.
According to the testimony of police officer Kalyegera, Karenzi had given Kateregga a Shs10,000 tip.

Also in his testimony, Mr Kalyegyera told court that the following morning, he received another call from Mr Kananura informing him how someone came stumbling through the nearby football pitch and entered his Panamera premises and died there moments later.

“Upon hearing that, I organised other police officers and we went to the scene. At the scene I observed the deceased lying on his back, he was wearing black jeans and had a speck of blood on his shirt,” he said.

The witnesses added that the regional CID who also was present at the scene of crime, ordered the officers to remove the body and take it to the city mortuary.

The hearing resumes on December 13.
